The cold winters and warm summers in Central Massachusetts lead to many homeowners finding unwelcome house guests invading their home. During the winter, animals like raccoons, rats, mice and skunks look for safe places to shelter from the winter. During the spring, mammals create dens and nests to give birth. Attics, basements, and crawlspaces provide safe, warm places to accomplish both of these things.

A few of the most common offenders invading your home include bats, skunks, raccoons, rodents, opossums, and birds. Unfortunately, any of these creatures can create significant property damage in the form of damaged wiring, soiled insulation, and cracked drywall. In addition to the potential for damage, these critters also bring a health threat to your home. With many of these animals capable of carrying dangerous diseases, it is critical to remove the threat as soon as possible.

The most common signs you have a wild animal in your attic

Generally, an animal in your house will avoid you. If you do not physically see the animal, it can sometimes be very challenging to figure out what kind of animal you are dealing with. If you are unsure, we recommend calling a professional wildlife removal company.

Noises at night

Vocal noises, scurrying, scampering, thumps.

Strange smells

An aroma of ammonia in or around your home – the longer an animal is in your attic, the more the animal will urinate, and you may start to smell it.

Evidence of animal feces

An animal in your house will defecate in your home.

Property damage

Damage to the outside of your property or an entry point – many animals will utilize construction gaps while others will cause damage to enter your home.

Unusual water leak

It is possible for animals to damage water lines or chew into them for a source of water.

Unexpected power issue

Rodents like squirrels and rats are chewers and will chew anything to help trim their teeth.

Can I DIY Wildlife Removal?

You might think wildlife removal is an issue you can tackle on your own. Who wouldn’t want to save some money? But before you attempt to trap an animal in your attic, you need to make sure you are properly prepared.

First, make sure you have the proper PPE to enter an attic. Identify the animal to ensure you use appropriate and legal removal techniques. For example, you cannot trap or exterminate bats.

After you have identified the animal, you can use the appropriate wildlife removal technique. Things to consider include type of trap, placement of trap, and what kind of bait to use. You need to make sure all animals are gone before moving on to the next step.

Next, seal all entry points on your home. Avoid sealing an animal into your attic because this will cause the animal(s) to panic, and in turn, cause more destruction.

Finally, you will need to disinfect all contaminated areas of the attic to remove any bacteria associated with the animal’s waste. Alternatively, you can remove and replace your insulation. Please keep in mind that every state has laws pertaining to handling of different animals.

Wildlife Removal Process

Due to the dangers of animal removal, like entering attics/crawl spaces, climbing ladders, roof work, and chemical handling, we highly recommend you find a company that is licensed and insured. You also want to be sure the company you choose specializes and is knowledgeable in the animal you are dealing with.

A professional will be able to educate you, walk you through the entire animal removal process, answer any questions or concerns you may have, and provide you with additional tips for your home.

Here’s what to expect when working with Trutech:

Step 1: Inspection

When a Trutech technician arrives at your home, we will start by asking questions about your experience with the nuisance wildlife at hand. Once we have a firm grasp on the issues facing the property owner, a thorough inspection of the interior and exterior of the home begins. This includes looking at the attic, crawlspace, roof, and any possible entry points. Since each species and home is different, the length of the inspection can vary. It can take between 30 minutes to 3 hours to accurately evaluate the extent of the wildlife nuisance issue.

Step 2: The Plan

With the results of the inspection, we share our findings with you. And share how we will solve the problem for you. Although each wildlife control plan is unique to the home, it may include live trapping, direct capture, one-way doors, or deterrents. Before any work begins, we make sure that you are comfortable with the steps being taken to resolve the nuisance wildlife issue.

Step 3: Get To Work

If you approve of the plan, we will set up a time to put it into place. After the animal removal has taken place, we will repair any damage caused by the critter. Additionally, we will apply sanitizing and ectoparasite agents to the affected areas. Once the plan is executed, your home will be returned to its normal condition.

Step 4: Full Home Exclusion

Wildlife removal is just one part of the plan. All plans include wildlife control measures to prevent any future problems. This is often completed by implementing a full home exclusion. The goal is to create physical barriers to prevent animals from entering your home in the future. A few possible exclusion techniques include gable vents, ridge vents, crawlspace vents, roof returns, and plumbing stacks. With the appropriate exclusions in place, you can rest easy knowing that a long-term solution is in place to protect your home from nuisance wildlife.

Guarantee and Warranty

Once installed, Trutech offers a one-year warranty on full home exclusions. Plus, there is a 100% satisfaction guarantee. If you aren’t satisfied with the initial work, Trutech will send out a service manager to inspect the work completed and make any necessary adjustments.
