It’s finally here! Temperatures are more consistently creeping into the 60s and we’re starting to shake off the winter glum. The days of being able to pop out for a quick jog or walk around the block are upon us. With this in mind, we want to share a few tips to help you stay safe and motivated this running season.
Find the Perfect Playlist
Most of us run or jog with music, but if you haven’t refreshed your playlist in a while, you may be surprised by the extra oomph a fresh, upbeat playlist gives to your workout.
Been listening to Disney for so long, you aren’t even sure what constitutes good music anymore? Thankfully Spotify makes it easy to find playlists that fit any mood or activity. Pop Workout 2022, 2000s alternative rock and 90s Country are a few playlists in our recently played.
Next time you are sitting on the couch, take a few minutes to browse Spotify and queue up some awesome playlists for your next workout opportunity. Ask your friends for their playlist recommendations.
Keep in mind: no matter how good the playlist, make sure that you are still tuned into your surroundings. Run with one earbud in or keep the volume at a level where you can still hear traffic and other noises around you.
Inform Another Person of Your Plan
When you finally find a few minutes to spare for a jog, it can be tempting to run out of the house before something or someone keeps you from your workout. Take 45 seconds to inform your partner or another adult in your house of your running plans. Mention how long you plan to go out and the rough route you plan to take.
It is helpful for the other person to know when they should start to worry and where they would need to look for you should something come up.
Find Your Community
Don’t let the idea of a running club intimidate you. There are many types of groups out there from “Couch to 5k” groups to more experienced groups, to everything in between. There are many groups that are solely about accountability and camaraderie so find what works for you. Or, tap into your existing communities (Hello, Central Mass Moms!) and gauge others’ interest in getting together for a regular track or trail meetup.
If an organized group is more than you are willing to commit to, find 5ks or other events in your community you can sign yourself up for and work towards. For starters, we’d love for you to join the Vanessa T. Marcotte Foundation for its 6th annual 5k Walk/Run on June 18, 2022 at Wachusett Mountain in Princeton, MA. Run or walk, and enjoy post-race fun with food trucks, activities for kids, and raffles. It’s always an amazing day. We’d love to see you there.
