Recipe for a Perfect Snow Day

Imagine This: You wake up and it’s snowing! This means your office is closed, so you have time to curl up under a blanket with a hot cup of coffee and a new book. This is going to be a great day! Suddenly, you hear your 4-year-old banging things around in his room. That means clothes and toys are all over the floor. Next, your 2-year-old starts crying from her room that she peed through her pull up. Suddenly, your day took a turn for the worse.

Now is the time to have an AMAZING snow day!

Snow days with kids can be exhausting, but if you play your cards right, you can have a great day AND some “me-time.” Here is how we plan a perfect snow day.

Start with the wake-up

My kids do much better when they stick to their routine. I will let them sleep a little later but try to keep to the routine of getting up and getting ready for the day.

Snow day breakfasts!

Snow day breakfasts are the best! School and workdays don’t leave any time for breakfast. There’s nothing exciting about grabbing a baggie of cereal or granola bar on the way out the door. Take advantage of the extra time and make a fun breakfast. Mickey mouse shaped waffles and “unicorn pancakes” are favorites in our house.

Getting Outside

After breakfast it’s time to start the long process of bundling everyone up in snow suits. Put at least 2 extra pairs of mittens in your pocket, which will be a life saver when the first pair gets soaked through. Pro Tip: Give them a snack just before going outside. Getting a snowsuit on can really build up an appetite. This will also help them stay outside longer. Once everyone is outside, stay as long as you can. Go sledding, build a snowman or fort, make snow angels, whatever keeps their interest. You can even go crazy and bring some food coloring or paint outside. Snow is a great canvas.

Lunchtime

Once the kids are sufficiently worn out, get them back inside. Next, put on a movie and enjoy a fun picnic lunch in the living Room. Grilled cheese and hot chocolates make a great snow day lunch. After lunch and a movie, it’s bath time. This is a snow day bath, make sure to add bubbles and colorful bath bombs!

“Me-time”

After the bath, it’s time for jammies and a nice long nap – and if Mom decides to join the naptime – skip the guilt, you deserve it!
